#28 Inside and outside of the Franciscan convents

Convents that open and close in courts as fortresses. Indigenous artist's hand.

Experience

The Franciscans arrived in Mexico in 1524 to evangelize the conquered territory. In Puebla, the first convents are characteristic of borderlands constructions, real fortress s to suit indigenous customs and give rise to unique outdoor spaces where they take on a new role. To the Indian, unaccustomed to closed spaces, open and courts chapels chapels for processions, as in San Andres Calpan are built.

Of life of these friars, true pioneers in strange lands, and their integration in indigenous communities we speak former convent converted into museums of Huejotzingo and Huaquechula. The passage round of  Tepeaca and battlements of San Pedro Cholula Cholula remind us that were difficult times.

Art is interpreted through the hands of local artist, the tlacuilo, leading an

all-Mexican style: tequitqui.

The tlacuilo left his signature on jaguars in the walls of the convents of Cholula or Cuautinchan, angels winged eagle Tecamalchaco, plant garlands Tochimilco or Zacatlan, the facade of the  Third Orden in Atlixco oror stones carved with motifs prehispanic at the base of the convents of Tepeaca or Huaquechula.

The former Franciscan convents Calpan, Huejotzingo and Tochimilco are Heritage. Some monasteries have real gems, like the extraordinary altarpieces Cuauhtinchan and Huaquechula, the coffered ceiling medallions Tlatlauquitepec or sotocoro of Tecamachalco. . Convents of other orders now house interesting museums, including the former Carmelite convent of Tehuacan or Atlixco, or the convents of Sta. Mónica where lived Sister Catherine de San Juan and Sta. Rosa in Puebla.
